Traditionally, Tecomaria capensis used as medicine to relieve pain, slepplessness, diarrhea and in flammation. In my previous study methanolic extract of Tecomaria capensis leaves (TCLE) showed good antimicrobial, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, wound healing, antidiabetic and antidiarrheal activity. For the safer use of this plant extract in further research need to evaluate toxicity. So’ this study designed to evaluate acute toxicity considering different parameters and higher dose (500 mg/kg). Five group (n=6) of albino rats treated with single dose of distilled water, TCLE 300 mg/kg, 1000 mg/kg, 3000 mg/kg and 5000 mg/kg p.o. respectively, and kept under observation (Alertness, grooming, touch response, convulsions, tremors, excitability, pupil size, food intake, urination, hyperactivity, lacrimation and writhing) up to 14 days. On the 15th day blood were collected and AST, ALT, LDH, urea, glucose, cholesterol and creatinine level determined. In acute toxicity study, the extract administration up to a higher dose 5000 mg/kg body weight did not cause any mortility, and toxic change in behavior and biochemical parameters of the animals. Methanolic extract of Tecomaria capensis leaves safe and nontoxic up to 5000 mg/kg p.o. Our study may be useful to use safer dose of this plant extract in further research.
